About us

Welcome to Inhabit.life—a place where we believe midlife isn’t something to endure; it’s a doorway into what’s possible.
This isn’t a season to limp through; it’s a time to lean in, face the questions, and meet the challenges that shape this phase. We believe midlife isn’t a descent; it’s an awakening. Yes, it serves up hard truths and unexpected hurdles, but it also offers the chance to shed outdated expectations, find new depth, and live with curiosity and meaning. This is where you become not just older but bolder, stepping into who you’re meant to be.

'Falling Up' the Oregon Coast

It all began on a road trip, winding down the Oregon coast. Our founder, Peter Reek, and his wife, Jodi, were driving beside the ocean, listening to Richard Rohr’s Falling Upward. Rohr describes the two halves of life: the first, where we build, strive, and define ourselves, and the second, where things get interesting. It’s an invitation to let go of old scripts, to drop the need to prove, and to step fully into who we’re becoming.

Rohr’s words sparked something—a quiet understanding that midlife isn’t about what’s left; it’s about what’s next. This realization set Peter on a journey of his own, prompting him to return to school specifically to study the elements that contribute to a positive midlife transition. Through his research, Peter discovered that it’s our mindset, more than any circumstance, that shapes this season. Midlife isn’t about what happens; it’s about how we approach it, how we choose to ask the big questions, and how we allow ourselves to grow and adapt in new ways.

The Inspiration for our Name

Then came the name. In a quiet moment of inspiration, InHabit Magazine editor Annie Brandner shared a word that had been on her mind after reading David Whyte’s Consolations. In his essay on “Vulnerability,” Whyte writes:

“The only choice we have as we mature is how we inhabit our vulnerability…Our choice is to inhabit vulnerability as generous citizens of loss, robustly and fully…never bravely and completely attempting to enter, never walking fully through the door.”

That word—inhabit—hung in the air. It was the invitation we were looking for: to live fully, courageously, to meet life with all its questions and messiness. And so, InHabit took shape, a name with two calls. First, to inhabit our lives as they are, to show up with openness and heart. And second, to build practices that help us live with purpose and resilience.

The Birth of InHabit Magazine

With the name InHabit, the vision expanded. InHabit Magazine became a space to share stories, spark conversations, and explore what it means to inhabit midlife with intention. Each issue invites readers to view midlife as a time for discovery, for authenticity, for the questions that open doors, and the wisdom that comes from living them.
